    WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractic is a healing art that recognizes the nervous system as the primary determining factor of a person’s health. The human nervous system regulates all life-sustaining functions such as movement, blood circulation, digestion, breathing, and immunity from disease. The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, which resides inside the spine. Nerves branch out from the spinal cord, exit from between the bones of the spine (vertebrae), and divide numerous times until every cell in the body is reached. Nerves are like electrical wires that run through our body, and the brain is like a “generator” sending electrical impulses through these nerves to every single cell, telling them what to do. Thanks to this miraculous system, living in good health is possible-our digestive system automatically converts our meals into living tissue; our lungs automatically take in and extract oxygen from air; cuts and wounds automatically heal; and invading germs are automatically attacked and destroyed. Whenever the nervous system is functioning properly, optimum health is possible.

The spine, although designed to protect the spinal cord and its delicate nerves, very often does the opposite. In the course of living, we encounter minor and major traumas to the spine, such as the birthing (delivery) process, falls, sporting accidents, car accidents (whiplash), repetitive/cumulative trauma associated with work (typing, sitting, lifting) or a hobby; also poor posture, inadequate sleep, improper exercise, poor diet and obesity. Over time, these events can gradually wear down parts of the spine, change shape, or misalign, and irritate the nerves within. This results in body dysfunction and ill-health. Symptoms of spinal misalignment can include pain, numbness, and tingling in the spine or limbs; chronic headaches; frequent colds, and the feeling of fatigue and stress.

Chiropractic is the art and science of detecting spinal misalignments, called subluxations, and correcting them naturally and painlessly, without the use of drugs or surgery. When spinal irritation to the nerves is reduced, nerve function is restored, and the body typically returns to a more optimal state, resulting in improved health.

Chiropractors use the spinal adjustment as the main method of spinal correction. A spinal adjustment is a precise, manually delivered, gentle force into a stuck or misaligned joint. Adjustments improve range-of-motion (flexibility) and can result in a sensation of well-being due to improved nerve and vascular (circulatory) function.

Chiropractic is effective, non-invasive, and extremely safe.

HELP AND RELIEF IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AT THE CHIRODŌJŌ

“I’ve seen people of all ages, conditions and concerns step into this office… and leave with a smile. I’m thrilled to be able to offer such a wide variety of care, so you can get what you want from us.”
Chiropractic care is meant to help your body heal itself, and sometimes
it just needs a little push…. and that’s where I come in.

FIVE REASONS PEOPLE CONSULT OUR PRACTICE:

Which one will prompt you to take action?

    OBVIOUS SPINAL PROBLEM

Most people associate chiropractic care with headaches, neck and back problems. Our interest in the spine is because it houses the nervous system that carries vital communications between your brain and your body.

    VISCERAL OR ORGANIC COMPLAINTS

Some consult our practice for “non-back” health problems. If the practice member has subluxations, chiropractic care may be helpful. And while formal research is limited, we’ve had personal experiences with those suffering from bedwetting, asthma, colic and even stomach problems.

    NATURAL DRUG HEALTH CARE

Those who wish to avoid drugs or surgery will often visit our practice first. Chiropractic care is a safe, natural approach to better health.

    MAINTENANCE AND PERVENTION

If you’ve had chiropractic care elsewhere, you already know the value of ongoing chiropractic care. We’d be honored to be your Doctor.

    STAY WELL

We experience life through our nervous system. Those who want to optimize their health, be all that they can be and perform at their best, should give us a call at (480) 442-5126.

    WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

You’re welcome to visit our friendly, comfortable office. Relax and know that you’re in great hands!

    LET’S GET STARTED

You can expect to plan for a 45-minute visit on your first appointment. We recommend you arrive 15 minutes early to complete your paperwork.

Then, you’ll have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. BigSauce. Depending on his findings, we’ll usually begin care on that day. If any imaging is needed, such as X-ray’s or MRIs, we’ll refer you out for that before starting treatment.

Please bring your insurance card in with you and wear comfortable clothes to your appointment.

    YOUR SECOND VISIT

Dr. BigSauce will discuss home care with you during your next appointment. You’ll learn about stretches and exercises you can do at home to complement your care at the office. Your care will continue with an adjustment. This visit takes 15-30 minutes.

EACH VISIT BUILDS ON THE ONE BEFORE

You’ll have your adjustment with Dr. BigSauce on each visit. We have many physical therapy modalities available, so depending on your needs we may follow your adjustment with heat, ice, electric stimulation, exercises or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM).

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING REGULAR VISITS

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Each appointment consists of a treatment that will include several types of therapy, depending on your individual needs. A session with Dr. BigSauce will typically include:

    CHIROPRACTIC SPINAL ADJUSTMENT (EVERY VISIT)

A chiropractic spinal adjustment is done to correct any dysfunctional joint complexes in the spine caused by subluxations, which can alter the function of the nervous system and create pain, illness, and “dis-ease”. If you remove this dysfunction by correcting the subluxations, or misalignments, with chiropractic adjustments, the nervous system will resume normal function and the pain and illness will resolve and go away. Unfortunately, because the nervous system controls all of the other systems of the body, the dysfunction caused by subluxations can affect any of the other systems within the body such as the digestive, circulatory, endocrine (hormones), muscular, and skeletal to name but a few.

    EXTREMITY ADJUSTMENTS (WHEN NECESSARY)

Extremity adjustments correct for misalignment in other areas of the body, such as the legs, ankles, toes, shoulders, arms, elbows, hands, and fingers. These adjustments help the body function at its optimal level and are especially helpful for the athlete to achieve peak performance or the office worker who deals with repetitive movement.
Like a regular workout at the gym, each visit builds on the ones before. Miss a visit and you can lose the momentum necessary to make the needed changes.
We recognize your time is valuable. So we do everything possible to run on time and minimize the impact on your busy life.

    THE 3 PHASES OF CARE

    Phase 1: RELIEF CARE

If you are in pain when you come into The ChiroDōjō, our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the underlying condition which is causing your pain, it is typical for a patient to need chiropractic care or adjustments 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks.

    Phase 2: CORRECTIVE/RESTORATIVE CARE

During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning. It is typical to need chiropractic care or adjustments about 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.

    Phase 3: WELLNESS CARE

Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing back pain or other pain symptoms, it is important to come in for periodic chiropractic adjustments to avoid further problems in the future. Usually, this phase of chiropractic care only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.

Exercising on a regular basis can help you live longer by keeping your body weight down and helping keep your muscles & joints supple. Exercise can also reduce stress levels, cardio-vascular problems, serious heart diseases and also help prevent osteoporosis and diabetes. Exercise releases endorphins, this triggers what is called an exercise high. This great motivational feeling can help you relax, improves mood, reduces anxiety and your pain threshold.

Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic Doctors teach their patients to use tested and effective diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and natural therapies to enhance the body’s natural ability to ward off and combat disease.

One of the hallmarks of natural medicine is the treatment of the whole person. All too often, busy healthcare providers turn to pharmaceuticals as their first option to treat isolated symptoms – without taking the time to discover the root causes of those symptoms. While pharmaceuticals have their place, appropriate natural intervention can often prevent the progression of a disease or condition and result in a resolution of symptoms. Naturopathic medicine presents a wide range of options for those who wish to optimize their health or take a proactive approach to managing a diagnosed chronic condition.

          Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

          THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE

Naturopathic medicine recognizes the body’s inherent ability, which is ordered and intelligent, to heal itself. Naturopathic doctors act to identify and remove obstacles to recovery, and to facilitate and augment this healing ability.

          IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSES

The naturopathic doctor seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to eliminate or merely suppress symptoms.

          FIRST DO NO HARM

Naturopathic medicine follows three principles to avoid harming the patient:

          • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects.
          • Avoid, when possible, the harmful suppression of symptoms.
          • Acknowledge and respect the individual’s healing process, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat illness.

          DOCTOR AS TEACHER

Naturopathic doctors educate the patient and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also acknowledge the therapeutic value inherent in the doctor-patient relationship.

          TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON

Naturopathic doctors treat each individual by taking into account physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic doctorss encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual path.

          PREVENTION

Naturopathic doctors emphasize disease prevention, assessment of risk factors and hereditary susceptibility to disease and making appropriate interventions to prevent illness. Naturopathic medicine strives to create a healthy world in which humanity may thrive.

          WELLNESS

Wellness follows the establishment and maintenance of optimum health and balance. Wellness is a state of being healthy, characterized by positive emotion, thought and action. Wellness is inherent in everyone, no matter what disease(s) is/are being experienced. If wellness is really recognized and experienced by an individual, it will more quickly heal a given disease than direct treatment of the disease alone.

            WHAT HAPPENS AT AN APPOINTMENT?

The initial appointment for adults is around 90 minutes, for pediatrics it is 60 minutes. The bulk of this appointment is spent gathering a detailed history, reviewing past labs and imaging, reviewing overall contributors to health, getting to know the patient and understanding the scope of their health care goals.

After this appointment, we either have a treatment plan in place or are working on gathering more information through lab work. If more labs are needed, we may hold off on a comprehensive treatment plan until the follow-up appointment.

Follow-up appointments are for reviewing labs, checking in on progress and/or evaluating new concerns. These may be more frequent in the case of acute issues, but are generally every 6-12 weeks. As symptoms resolve, appointment space out to every 3-6 months, and then may only be on a as needed basis.

            BEFORE YOUR VISIT

            • Fill out your paperwork
            • Gather all labs results from last 2 years (or more if applicable)
            • Contact insurance company and inquire about lab coverage (what labs are in-network, what do they cover, does it go to deductible first etc.) and reimbursement for out-of-network services
            • Consider writing a health timeline including symptoms, major stressors, relevant medical history
            • Write a list of questions and concerns to make sure we cover everything

Acupuncture has been used for more than 2,500 years. It decreases inflammation and increases blood flow, which helps alleviate chronic pain of all kinds: headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, and more. Experience relief without the side effects of treatments like surgery and prescription medications.

Traditional acupuncture utilizes tiny needles to access distinct points on the body to restore balance, alleviate pain, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance sleep, treat disease, and improve overall well-being. Traditional acupuncture treats the whole person.

And sometimes you just need a time out without distractions. Our Zen-inspired atmosphere promotes deep relaxation while enhancing your mood and improving sleep.

            How Does it Work?

Acupuncture stimulates local blood flow, normalizes the nervous system, improves emotional well-being (effects endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine), and lessens pain sensitivity.

Tiny needles are inserted carefully into key points on the body to trigger an increase in blood flow to areas where it is blocked or weak. When healthy blood flow is restored, the body’s natural healing abilities are activated, sending the body back into balance.

Traditional acupuncture allows us to access full-body health without the removal of any clothing. We’ll pinpoint and effectively treat your concerns via specific points on your head, face, arms, hands, lower legs and feet all while you relax and take a breather from today’s stressors. Life is stressful… let us help.

            The BENEFITS of Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture treats the whole body from head to toe. In addition to its wide-spread use in private clinics, acupuncture is also used in many conventional medical institutions, including hospitals, doctor’s offices, and non-profits around the world. Acupuncture in hospitals.

Acupuncture treats a wide range of medical conditions, including:

            Chronic and Acute Pain

It is estimated that over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain (pain lasting for more than three months) with low back, mid back, upper back, hip, shoulder, knee, elbow and joint pain being the most common complaints. Studies have shown that acupuncture helps alleviate chronic pain and it comes without the side effects of more common treatments like surgery and prescription medications. The process increases blood flow and triggers the release of the body’s internal chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins, which have pain-relieving properties. Acupuncture can help manage chronic pain and related disability associated with back pain, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, neck pain, and severe headaches or migraines.

The Archives of Internal Medicine has documented research compiled by international experts spanning 29 studies and 18,000 participants. The results of these controlled studies concluded that acupuncture relieved common forms of pain up to 50%. In addition, there is less risk associated with acupuncture treatments compared to prescription medications.

Worldwide, 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain. Drugs are often prescribed as a first-line treatment, yet only 23% of patients with chronic pain find opioids effective. Acupuncture is an effective, evidence-based, safe, cost-effective, and available treatment modality to treat chronic pain

            Sports Injuries

Acupuncture has been proven to accelerate the healing of several types of sports injuries such as sprains, strains and spasms. It relieves pain, decreases inflammation, and increases blood flow resulting in quicker recovery and enhanced performance.

            Insomnia, Sleep & Depression

Insomnia and depression are often linked and can be a result of chronic stress. The WHO estimates that more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. It’s also the world’s leading cause of disability. Acupuncture treatment is associated with an increase in the level of neurobiologically active substances, such as endorphins and enkephalins. There are also data indicating that acupuncture induces the release of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. In addition, a meta-analysis of research regarding the use of acupuncture for insomnia indicates that it is an effective treatment method. Additionally, acupuncture is a holistic medicine, treating not only the symptoms but also the primary cause without medication.

            Digestive Disorders

Acupuncture is widely recognized as an effective treatment for many digestive ailments including nausea, vomiting, heartburn and stomach pain. Preliminary studies show that it may also be an option for treating chronic constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease. Acupuncture works by rebalancing the endocrine system and assists the body in optimizing digestion. Both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) support Acupuncture in the treatment of various digestive disorders based on Randomized Controlled Trials.

            Stress & Anxiety

Stress has become part of everyday life and when unchecked it can lead to more serious concerns. Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. It’s estimated that 40 million adults ages 18 and older, or 18 percent of the country’s population, have an anxiety disorder. Acupuncture has been proven to reduce stress, preventing the onset of several chronic conditions including anxiety, head and neck pain, weight gain, and insomnia. Acupuncture provides a safe and effective option for those seeking a natural approach to the treatment of stress and anxiety related symptoms.

            Allergies & Respiratory

Studies have shown that acupuncture decreases the symptoms of seasonal allergies such as a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy and watering eyes. Many patients report relief during their first visit, and ongoing treatments enhance the benefits and keep symptoms at bay. NCBI – National Institutes of Health.

            Migraines & Headaches

The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published a study showing that acupuncture helped reduce the frequency of migraines in participants who were chronic sufferers. Acupuncture offers a more natural approach to migraines and headaches without the side effects that often accompany medication.

            Relaxation

Acupuncture promotes deep relaxation by activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system or “rest, digest and recover” functions. Reaching this state is essential to restoring and maintaining health. That is why regular acupuncture (at least 2x/month) is always recommended.

We believe that acupuncture should be a convenient and approachable part of everyday life. There are 28 diseases, symptoms, or condition recognized by the World Health Organization that acupuncture effectively treats and more than 60 additional conditions are currently being studied.

Acupuncture is proven to help those suffering from diabetes, insomnia, chronic pain, PTSD, stress and many other conditions that can negatively affect your ability to live life to its fullest. There have even been examples of acupuncture making cancer treatments more effective. There’s no age limit, no drugs, no expensive testing. This type of care should be available in a much more accessible manner – and now it is.

Your acupuncturist will create a treatment plan specifically for you based on your consultation. It is important to follow your treatment plan to achieve the best results. Just like any health and wellness routine – the key is consistency. We think you will enjoy the experience so much it will be easy to keep coming back. And your health will thank you.

            Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects are minimal but may include fatigue, slight bruising, tenderness at needle site, lightheadedness, temporary worsening of symptoms, and emotional release.

Who is a Candidate for Traditional Acupuncture?

Our licensed acupuncturist will meet with you prior to your first treatment to ensure you are a suitable candidate for traditional acupuncture, but most men and women looking for a natural approach to healing and overall wellness are candidates for traditional acupuncture. Those who are not eligible for traditional acupuncture include those with hemophilia or contagious skin diseases. We take special precautions when working with those on blood-thinning medication or tend to bruise easily.

            - The World Health Organization has recognized acupuncture as effective in treating mild to moderate depression.

          • Massage Therapy Dōjō

Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities). People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons – to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness.

            Benefits of Massage

You know that post-massage feeling. Your mind is clear and your body is relaxed. An occasional massage leaves you feeling great, but regular massage can do so much more. The work your therapist does in each session builds on itself, helping your body maintain its relaxed state and your muscles to remain loose even during times of physical and mental stress.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY ENCOURAGES RELAXATION

How often and how long are you actually able to disconnect from life? Massage has been shown to help the body enter a relaxing rest-and-recovery mode – an effect that lingers long after the massage is over.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY IMPROVES BLOOD CIRCULATION

The pressure created by massage therapy helps move blood through congested areas. This causes new blood to flow in and old blood to flow out, resulting in improved body function.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY IMPROVES FLEXIBILITY AND RANGE OF MOTION

As we age, joints tend to tighten, making range of motion more restricted. Massage helps keep joints more fluid, making you more flexible and less prone to injury.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY IMPROVES POST-OPERATIVE SURGICAL REHABILITATION

Massage can help the body pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. This makes massage therapy a great supplement to post-operative rehabilitation.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY IMPROVES POSTURE

Unlike other bad habits, poor posture can help be corrected by relaxation. Massage helps reinforce healthy and natural movements, which can get your posture back on track.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY IMPROVES REHABILITATION AFTER INJURY

Rehabilitating any injury can be a frustrating process. Massage can aid in rehabilitation by increasing flexibility and strength.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE

There are more misconceptions about high blood pressure than nearly any other medical condition. But massage therapy is one of the few effective ways that has been found to stave off high blood pressure naturally.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY PROMOTES DEEPER AND EASIER BREATHING

One of the telltale signs of anxiety and stress is constricted breathing. Massage can play an important role in relieving respiratory issues and training the body how to relax.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY RELAXES MUSCLES

Got neck, back or muscle pain? Odds are, sitting all day at the office is the culprit. Massage helps get to the root of persistent pain by relaxing tense muscles.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY RELIEVES HEADACHES

45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches and migraines. Massage can help ease the pressure and pain, which may also reduce the chance and frequency of headaches.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY RELIEVES STRESS

Who doesn’t want to reduce the stress in their life? Stress relief is key to finding the balance of a healthy lifestyle. Even a single massage session has been shown to significantly lower heart rate, cortisol and insulin levels – all of which help reduce daily stress.

            • MASSAGE THERAPY STRENGTHENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Studies indicate that regular massage can naturally increase the immune system’s cytotoxic capacity–the activity level of the body’s natural “killer cells”.

Seratonin and dopamine are released through massage, and the result is a feeling of calm relaxation that makes chronic or habitual....stress much easier to overcome.
