INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION THERAPY (IASTM)

WHAT IS INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION?

It is a new kind of treatment technique which uses a variety of different metal or plastic tools to locate and treat soft tissue injuries. These tools are ergonomically designed to help the therapist to detect and treat any soft tissue dysfunction. This procedure is rapidly growing in its popularity due to its effectiveness and efficiency while remaining non-invasive. Patient symptoms usually include:

  • Scars formation and adhesion due to injury or surgery
  • Decreased range of motion or pain due to muscle tightness imbalance
  • Cervical or lumbar sprains or strains

WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM IASTM?

People who might benefit from IASTM include but are not limited to:

  • Post-surgical and traumatic scars
  • Myofascial pain and restrictions
  • Musculoskeletal imbalances
  • Cervical or lumbar sprains and strains
  • Plantar fasciitis (foot pain)
  • Trigger finger
  • Tendonitis and tendinopathies
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Heel pain (Achilles Tendonitis)
  • Shoulder pain (rotator cuff tendonitis)

The IASTM has provided a lot of benefits on the patient as well as therapist level which includes faster rehabilitation and recovery, reduced treatment time, reduced anti-inflammatory medications use, improved range of motion, strength and pain perception following treatment, improved tissue extensibility, decreased scar tissue formation, increased cellular activity near the injury site, full functional restoration and reduced physical stress on the therapist.

The treatment process goes through several different phases which include a detailed discussion about your problem and health history followed by a physical assessment of your body and finally the treatment process.

During the treatment process, the therapist uses the IASTM tool to locate for fascial or muscle restrictions. These areas will feel crumbly or rough as the device passes over them. Once the area is found, the therapist will scrape it with an appropriate amount of pressure using the tool, causing microtrauma.  This process of micro trauma stimulates the local inflammatory response which initiates reabsorption of excessive or inappropriate scar tissue and facilitates a cascade of healing activities. Therefore, abnormal adhesions are broken down, allowing full functional restoration to occur.
