MASSAGE

WHAT IS MASSAGE?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues in the body. It is a collective term that covers various techniques and types of massages to relieve pain and alleviate some physical conditions. Massage techniques are applied using hands, fingers, elbows, forearms, feet or through a massaging device. Massage therapists work by applying pressure through kneading, gliding, pressing or rubbing the layers of the muscles and skin to provide a relaxing sensation. The primary goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health and well-being. Patient symptoms usually include:

  • Feeling stressed or fatigued due to over work
  • Pain including muscle tension, back, shoulder and neck pain
  • Chronic headache or migraine due to stress

WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM MASSAGE?

Although massage is used among many for general relaxation but people with some other conditions who could benefit from massage therapy include the following but are not limited to:

  • Muscular or joint pain and stiffness
  • Stress
  • Headache or migraine
  • Injury or trauma
  • Muscle spasms
  • Scar tissue and adhesions
  • Swelling or oedema

Massage therapy not only provides relaxation but also offers many other physical and mental benefits such as relieve stress, relieve muscle stiffness and tension, reduces swelling and pain, promotes healing, improve flexibility, improve blood and lymph circulation, improves posture, reduce anxiety and depression, promotes a relaxed mental state and fosters a feeling of well-being.

Before the massage therapy, your therapist will take history and information about your health condition, any symptoms, your medical history, and what kind of treatment you want. Your therapist will explain to you the type of massage techniques they will use. Massage therapy can be applied while sitting or lying as per your preference and need. During the treatment, the therapist will evaluate painful and tense areas by palpation to determine how much pressure to apply and then start the therapy. A typical session might last 10 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of massage and your treatment.
