MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY

MFR is performed by taking a precise hand or thumb contact on the affected area to tension the tissue as the patient is directed through specific ranges of motion.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY (MFR)

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY?

Myofascial Release is a safe and skillful hands-on technique that is used for treating muscle tightness, immobility and pain by relaxing the contracted muscles and improving blood circulation and oxygen. Our muscles are surrounded by connective tissue called fascia, which helps in promoting our health, but only when unrestricted. This type of therapy mainly deals with the connective tissue of the body to relieve the tightness that can cause muscle restrictions and help you get rid of that pain and improve your performance. Patient symptoms usually include:

  • Deep pain in localized areas of muscles
  • Pain that gets worse when the affected muscle is stretched or strained
  • Muscles that are weak, stiff or have decreased range of motion

Who Might Benefit From Myofascial Release?

Patients who are most likely to benefit from MFR include but are not limited to:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome (most frequently benefit from this therapy)
  • Minor injuries or trauma
  • Chronic headaches
  • Leg pain due to venous insufficiency
  • Decreased flexibility or function due to injury
  • Muscle tightness etc.

The MFR therapy has a wide range of potential benefits including improved joint movement and flexibility, improved muscle function, reduce pain, release trigger points, enhance blood circulation, correct muscle imbalances, reduce adhesions and scar tissues, help alleviate headaches or migraines, reduce muscle tightness and also help with relieving symptoms of some diseases such as fibromyalgia, venous insufficiency, myofascial pain syndrome etc.

The treatment process goes through several different phases which include a detailed discussion about your problem and health history followed by a physical assessment of your body and finally the treatment process.

When starting the treatment, the therapist locates myofascial areas that feel stiffed and fixed instead of elastic and movable under light manual pressure. The therapist will then stretch and massage those areas that feel rigid. The process is repeated multiple times on the same point until the tension is fully released. The focused manual pressure and stretching used in MFR loosen up restricted movement, leading indirectly to relieving pain.
