WHAT IS PROPRICEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION (PNF)?

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is an advanced form of flexibility training that involves the contraction and stretching of muscles. This technique was initially developed as a part of the neuromuscular rehabilitation programme. But now it is used for a variety of training and exercise purposes because of its perceived effectiveness. PNF stretching relies on reflexes to produce deeper stretches that increase flexibility. Patient symptoms usually include:

  • Tightness of muscle that restricts motion
  • Neurological or neuromuscular disease symptoms
  • Decreased muscle flexibility or range of motion

WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM PNF?

PNF provides benefits to a great variety of people with many different kinds of conditions which include the following but are not limited to:

  • Muscle tightness or spasm
  • Muscular or soft tissue injury
  • Athletes and sports personnel
  • Decrease range of motion and mobility
  • Decrease muscle flexibility and tone
  • Patients recovering from a brain or spinal cord injury
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Age related neurological detriments
  • Joint stiffness

PNF has proven to be very beneficial in many clinical conditions as well as general training. Some of the benefits of PNF are to improve flexibility, increase range of motion and muscle strength, helps prevents muscle tear during exercise, improves athletic performance, improve strength and stability of joints, improves mobility, reduce muscle tightness, enhances balance and coordination, improves muscle tone and helps them relax, helps promote movement and coordination in neurological or age-related detriments and injuries related to brain and spinal cord.

The treatment process goes through several different phases which include a detailed discussion about your problem and health history, followed by a physical assessment of your body and finally the treatment process.

During the treatment, your therapist will guide you for a warm-up and then apply the PNF stretching technique. The PNF uses three types of stretching techniques which are hold-relax, contract-relax and hold-relax with agonist contraction. The selection of the method depends on the kind of movements and actions to be performed and the result to be achieved.
