WHAT IS REHABILITATIVE AND FUNCTIONAL CARE?

Rehabilitative and Functional Care program combines various techniques including strength, flexibility and agility training as well as training focused on the coordination of body parts and motion to prepare the individual to return to full participation. Previously it was applied to sports medicine only, but now this approach is also used to treat individuals returning to work or basic activities of daily living after suffering from a traumatic injury or neurological injury or detriments associated with ageing. Patient symptoms usually include:

  • Neurological disease symptoms
  • Spinal cord or brain injuries
  • Decreased function due to surgery

WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM REHABILITATIVE AND FUNCTIONAL CARE?

Since rehabilitative and functional care is a vast field which treats a broad spectrum of patients, so there are many patients who might be able to benefit from it. Some of them are listed below:

  • Post-surgery
  • Neurological diseases due to aging such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson, Alzheimer etc.
  • Chronic injury
  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Sports related injuries
  • Musculoskeletal dysfunction

Depending on the reason for treatment, this program can be of great benefit including pain management with reduced need for pain medication, avoid surgery, improved mobility and movement, improved balance, increased strength and power, maximize athlete performance, rapid recovery from injury or trauma, recovery from stroke or paralysis, fall prevention and management of age-related symptoms.

The treatment process goes through several different phases which include a detailed discussion about your problem and health history, followed by a physical assessment of your body and finally the treatment process. The treatment plan is a combination of different therapy methods which are set according to individual requirements. The individual should begin rehabilitation as soon as the injury allows which should be injury specific and follows a multi-phase program that involves progressive steps from controlling pain to the restoration of motion to development of muscle strength, power and endurance to return to the specific activity.
